Hit Pit MMA does well at NW Grappling 11-25

Great Job to Jesse and Daniel for their performances at the NW Grappling Championships last Saturday. Jesse went 4-1 with all wins by submission and his only loss was a double OT loss on points. Great Job!

Daniel Valdez got 3rd place going 2-1.

Jesse also won the submission victory award for most submissions in the tournament and got himself some cool grappling/fight shorts. Sweet!!!!!!

Victorious!!!!!!!!!!

Spokane Showdown Nov 1st 2008

http://www.nwfightscene.com/SS11.htm

Wil Beck wins his match against Mitchell Harris by RNC after pounding away in mount position. 1st round submission win. Wil got a solid takedown and controlled well from side control before moving to full mount. No injuries and he is ready to fight again ASAP.

Kurry Stap becomes the new welterweight champ with a triangle submission in the 1st round over Gary Stone. Gary and Kurry both threw a few kicks and punches at each other before Stone initiated a takedown. Kurry fought it for a while and when Gary finally got it, it was right into a tight triangle. Gary lifted Kurry up into the air for a big slam, but Kurry used his core strength and leverage to get it back to the mat where he was able to finish the fight.

Great Job to you both. You make the team proud!

Students of the Month 10-15

I apologize for the absence of the Student of the Month. It has been our honor to recognize students that have stood out during their training. We will be updating the page shortly. Keep in mind, that at the end of the year, December likley, we will recognize the student of the year. We would like to encourage everyone to try and make the student of the month. It requires a few things: attendance must be high- the best way to get better is to show up in the first place. Everyone is busy, but this is a sport that requires attention to details and mass repititions. 2nd- We look for who has made the most imporvements in a given month. Some people advance differently than others, what we are looking for is the students that came in and really dug in their heals to learn the material and can apply it. 3rd- overall attitude and sportsmanship in the gym. Who is out there training hard and supporting the team. A good attitude is contagious, and we all want to have it.

We look forward to recognizing the past and future Student's of the Month.

a few updates 9-29-08

There are a few announcements coming up.
·         First off, please make sure you are familiar with the new payment policy. It is on the website and I believe it is pretty clear. If you have any questions though, please don’t hesitate to email or call me and I will help clear it up.

·         We are changing, effective immediately, our 1 week free policy. We have had a run of people abusing it and have decided to make it a single practice for free before membership is required. Thank you to all that did not abuse this policy. So, let your friends know, if they want to come out and check it out, that they are welcome to do so, but just for one practice.

·         The black shirts are going to get ordered this week. Sorry for the delay, but we have been struggling to get the price that we wanted on them. Those of you that are paid new members are each entitled to one free shirt if you have not received one yet.

·         Tam is back on the 1st for Muay Thai. There will be 2 classes now. A beginner class from 7pm-8pm and an intermediate/advanced class from 8pm-9:30pm. Tam will let you know if you are in the correct class or not. This should allow for him to give you more one on one instruction and help you to progress even faster.

·         The 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu exclusive class is back up and running. See you at 6pm Monday and Wednesday.

no 10th planet for this week 9-23and9-25

just as a reminder: there will be no 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Class this week. Daniel and I are both in LA training with Eddie Bravo. We will continue the class as soon as we get back (on Friday). Wish us well.

NWGrappling Tournament

Great performance at NW Grappling! We had some great matches and even better finishes at Spokane's only Jiu Jitsu tournament.

Here are some of the highlights:

Daniel Valdez wins his division and goes 3-0 with all 3 by submission including 2 electric chairs. Daniel was never so much as even down on points during his matches and showed great techniques. This was his most impressive tournament yet. Great Job! I couldn't have asked for more. Especially the comment you made at the end. Priceless!!!!!!!

Will Beck decided to compete and used a submission he learned just 2 days prior to win his division! Great Job Will. You showed great intensity. I look forward to getting you some more time on the mats. Keep it up.

Jesse Hildenbrand (sorry if i screwed up your last name, im doing it from memory). Jesse has been training with us for 4 days. yes 4 days and decided that a tournament would be a fun idea. Got to love the wrestlers spirit of competition. Jesse came out and submitted his first 2 opponents before getting beat by the "not even close to being in the beginner divsion" Cody Cox. It was a good test for Jesse and though Cody won this round, it was still great to see the level of instinct that Jesse possed. Great job! Keep training hard. Jesse gets 2nd place in his first tournament with 4 days experience!!!!

Josh Keele decided to sleep walk thru his first match and paid for it. Then he showed up and submitted his next two, including a collar choke with a Gi.

Tim Zhelez did not have anyone in his division show up and was bumped into the adult bracket. He lost his opening match in a barn burner by points. Good luck next time Tim. Keep training hard.

All in all, Hit Pit MMA takes 2x 1st Place Finishes and 1x 2nd Place Finish. I dont know where that put us on team points, but i know if was good.

Update on Tam

For those of you that didnt know already, our Muay Thai instructor Tam had to have a minor surgery on his orbital (the bone that protects the pcoket around your eyeball). He had a minor fracture that was bleeding into his eye and it required a plate and screws to fix. So unfortunatey he will be unable to coach for a while as he needs to baby this injury for it to heal properly. Tam will not be coaching until 9-29-08. So until then we will work with the schedule and get other striking coaches to cover that class. You can expect that the class will be Muay Thai, Boxing, or a combination of MMA striking. I would encourage everyone to keep attending class and not take breaks. You have worked hard to get your conditioning up, dont let it go to waste. Wish well for Tam and we look forward to having him back at the end of the month.

thanks,

9-4-08 New additions to the schedule

We are pleased to announce that on Mondays and Wednesdays we will be offering more grappling for those that want more time on the mat. The classes will be from 6p-7p on Mon/Wed. During this hour, it is open to all levels and we will be focusing on 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu. For those of you that don't know what that is, it is BJJ with a distinct focus on no GI maneuvers. It relates better to what we want to accomplish more than anything else I have studied, yet. It was founded by Black Belt Eddie Bravo, whom I go to train with every quarter. Daniel Valdez has been studying this method with me since January of this year and he will be assisting me with the class. Daniel and I are both headed to train with Eddie Bravo and his 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu students here in September, so check the schedule.

This is a great opportunity for those of you (myself included) that want to compete in grappling tournaments and need more time in grappling class. Don't miss out!

MMA for MDA a Great Success!

8-10-08

The first ever MMA for MDA went off with no real hitches and even started on time at Rockies Espresso Co in Airway Heights WA.

Fighters from Monster Muscle, Icon Gym, Legacy MMA, United Grappling/Spirit Martial Arts, and of course Hit Pit MMA all competed in what was mostly a debut MMA attraction.

Our fighters did great. We did not get all the results that we wanted but the fights were action packed and the crowds really appreciated the action.

Chad and Tam: Both of you put forth great effort against totally legit opponents. For both of you, I have no questions that you won your first round. So we have one of 3 rounds taken care of. We will just work on the 2nd round for next time! :)  They were great fights and you both did well.

Dustin: you are the man! Dustin won with.... surprise suprise.... a guillotine from half guard off a takedown attempt by his opponent in which he almost got to ride the cockpit of an oncoming plane. There was big air. But Dustin held tough and finished his opponent early to get his first MMA win. Great job to all of you. I really appreciate the level that you brought to the fights and I know the fans did as well.

see you all in practice,

So a few of us went to Seattle for the Revolution. No trophies, but it was a good experience none the less. Daniel had a bad ass electric chair submission victory in his second match. The ref didn't know what it was or even where it hurt. We know this because he asked Daniel's opponent, : so um, where did that hurt you'? Awesome! I wanted to put the video on the website, but somehow my thumb drive corrupted the file. so no luck yet. See you all in training.

Dustin Waterbly is the Warrior of the Quarter

Dustin Waterbly wins the Hit Pit MMA's Warrior of the Quarter with 4 tournaments all of which he placed in. Great Job Dustin!

RW

Dustin won 3 matches in the Subleague Championships by submission (and one was not even a guillotine!!!) and had 3 draws going into the finals match. In the finals, Dustin grappled a guy that he had a draw with from another tournament. This time, it would be winner take all !! Dustin had his opponent in a couple dangerous positions and some good reversals, but it went the distance. So now they both had the same amount of points. They went into a one round overtime that would decide the winner. This round played out similar to the first in which Dustin almost arm barred his opponent from guard. His opponent did not have as good of offense, but had great defense and managed to get a few reversals and mount. This match went the distance as well, and the judges awarded the decision to Dustin's opponent. A great match to watch!!!

Hit Pit MMA Victorious at Gravity Fighting 3/29/08

I cant say enough about how well we did at Gravity Fighting. Great Work!

Gravity Fighting, the nonprofit organization of promoters/coaches Kenji Nitta and Pete Coplan saw its debut at the Kennewick Fairgrounds in front of a quiet 350 spectators.  Featuring fighters from Spokane and Oregon, Gravity Fighting put on a good show with a fight card that suffered a couple last minute setbacks.

First off was a submission grappling match between two members of the Hit Pit MMA gym in Spokane WA.

Chad Catron vs. Dustin Waterbly. These two fought a two round battle that saw both men get an armbar each during the competition. Catron looked like he might finish his opponent with a submission late in the second period to take the go ahead but was not quite in time. The match finishes as a draw, one submission each.

Sparring Demonstration/Exhibition:

Bryan Lively 165 (Spokane Boxing) vs. Jeff Sacha 148 (Spokane Boxing). These two put on what was the fight of the night. For a couple of teammates that essentially just wanted to be able to spar in front of an audience, they really put some leather on each other. Bryan seemed to have the edge early on but Jeff battled back in the 2nd and 3rd. Both fighters spent the whole time punching and moving, with not one tie up during their 3 round affair. Afterwards, both fighters mentioned that they were going at it with each other and really wanted to show off for the crowd. They did so in grand fashion. Great fight.

MMA Matches:

Doug Rima 0-0, 157 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) of Spokane WA vs. Jose Avila 0-0, 160 (TCMMA) of Kennewick WA

These two put on a good fight and it went back and forth with Rima not wanting to stand with Avila for any longer than he had to. For the most part Avila kept the fight standing where he had the advantage. In the end, the judges saw it the same and all scored Avila as a 30-27 winner.

Light Heavyweight Title Fight

Matt “the Thrill” Hill 0-0, 203 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) vs. “the Aztec Heat” Pro Escobedo 3-0, 204 (Impact Jiu-jitsu) of Beaverton Oregon.

Escobedo by TKO (ref Stoppage) 1:10 round 1

Brent “the Black Smith” Conley 0-0, 168.5 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) vs. Shane “Insane” Simmons 0-0, 170 (TCMMA)

Simmons by RNC 1:45 round 1

Heavyweight Title Fight

Kyle Welch 0-0, 253 (TCMMA) Burbank WA vs. Daniel Krug 4-1, 250 (Impact Jiu-jitsu) Beaverton Oregon

Krug by Guillotine choke   : 46 round 1

Robert Gmeiner 0-0, 186 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) vs. Daniel Valdez  0-1, 205 (Hit Pit MMA) Spokane WA

Valdez by TKO punches: 36 round 1

Daniel did a great job of punching through to defend the takedown and came out really aggressive early. Great sportsmanship showed as he knew his opponent was done and stopped before the ref moved in.

Great Month so far

Practices have been going really well so far at the Hit Pit. We had some great sparring last Saturday. Andrew, Jason, Daniel really showed up to play in their rounds. Great effort  guys. Keep it up, that is what we need in order to get ready. Big thanks to Matt Sweeney for taking some time to box and spar with us (even after a big meal :) ).

  Hamilton Throwdown Results!!!

A great showing for Icon Gym this weekend in the great republic of Montana. Icon Gym started the night with a big TKO due to strikes from Sean Johnson over Ramon Ramos of MT. Sean's opponent was tough, but he couldn't match Sean's rhythm and gave up his back before the ref stopped the bout due to strikes in the second round, and improved Sean to 2-3, and 2-0 at 155 lbs.

Next up was Neil Youngman, who got win of the night over a very game first time fighter in Nick Hedtzel. One beautiful left put Nick on queer street, and a second one left Nick out cold. Great killer instincts from Neil, who gets the first round KO, and improved to 1-1-1.

The crowd was hyped for hometown favorite and first time fighter Sam Polk, but Icon Gym's fearless leader Kenji Nitta had been there before. After a couple of quick exchanges, Sam tried a takedown, but was thwarted and ultimately mounted by Kenji. The ref stopped this bout after 10-15 unanswered punches, after Sam gave up his back, and Kenji earned his third win by TKO, improving to 3-0 for Fightforce and 3-1 overall.

Icon Gym's John Yeager was up next at 160, and put his 8-3 record on the line against Hellena's Casey Kelly and his 7-1 record in the night's main event. John was working to take the fight to the ground, but Casey was having none of that. After a long round of punches and an unbelievable display of heart, the corner decided John had had enough and threw in the towel, bringing John to 8-4.

The final fight of the night was Icon's Matt Williams. Matt was facing Montana's Jory Erickson at 195. Matt had some trouble making it to the venue, but he went out hard at the bell winning two of the three exchanges. Jory quickly decided he would lose the standup battle and took Matt down with a deep double and worked some great ground control before submitting Matt with a good rear naked choke.

A great night and a good showing for Icon Gym, as we went 3-2. Look for Kenji and Neil in December at the next Fightforce event, and Matt at Elements in Spokane.

Happy to be back

11/6/2007

Glad to be back from the Bahamas and Hurricane Noel. It was good times, but I was eager to get back to the gym and see how all of you have been doing. Give a pat on the back to Matt Williams who had a great fight against and undefeated Cody L. from the SikJitsu team. It was a good fight for Matt, who dominated position, all the way to the end of the 3rd round before he was taken out with a RNC. Great fight!!!

Preparing fighters in Spokane that would like to compete in the sport of mixed martial arts. Fighting in Spokane has never had a brighter future, and with that, the need for intense training has never been greater.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

MMA in Spokane is growing fast. None seem to recognize this more than local boxing pro turned coach, Rick Welliver.

Welliver with the help of his brothers; also pro boxers, Dewey and Chauncey, has established himself at the top of the heap in the boxing department here in Spokane. But even a diehard boxer like Rick seems to think this MMA thing is not a little red stepsister to boxing like some of his other boxing colleagues do. “Hey, this thing is taking off. And I want to be a part of it. Do I want to move into MMA instead of boxing? No way. But I would sure like to see some guys that could actually box when they are fighting instead of just throwing wild punches. “And with that push, Welliver’s Spokane Boxing has now opted to start training people in MMA. The catalyst came when a friend of Rick’s told him that he thought people would jump at the chance to have access to pro level boxing while they were training to compete in MMA.

Sometimes the biggest treasure is right under your nose. Or in this case right under your feet. The basement at Spokane Boxing has over 2000 sqft of floor space and just the right ambiance to bring out the fighter within. Fully matted with a lounge area for reviewing fights and chilling out, the Hit Pit MMA (www.hitpitmma.com ) gym has a distinct blend of toughness and class. The gym is not for everyone. Hit Pit MMA caters more toward the aspiring or ascending competitor than they do the casual fan. Practices are intense and focused. “Like it or not, this is the type of practice that most athletes need in order to compete in a sport as demanding as mixed martial arts”, says Coach RW Pegau.

Pegau began his training in southern California while enlisted in the USMC. “Yeah, things were pretty intense down there. It’s like the Mecca of BJJ and stuff like that, down in Southern Cal.” But after his enlistment ended he wanted to move back to Spokane to be near his family. The chance of doing more of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was unlikely to say the least. Pegau trained off and on while going to school and forging his career. Now though, he says that he is ready to try and give back some of that training that he got from others. “I’ve never really thought that one thing beats all. I really enjoy learning new ways of doing things and seeing how different schools operate.” At times that meant going to local high school gyms and practicing with their wrestling team. A more that awkward task at times, says the young looking 28 year old. “I had a kid ask if I was a senior as I walked into LC one time. I told him not for about 10 years.” Pegau has enlisted a group of different instructors to help him train people for fighting at MMA. “You can’t have one person trying to do everything in this sport. People that claim to be that good at all the functions of MMA are either kidding themselves and their students, or they should be in the UFC.” Hit Pit MMA features coaching and instruction from elite level boxers, Muy Thai kick boxers, submission grapplers, along with some judo and wrestling standouts to fill in all the gaps. “Lots of things can happen in a fight, and you need to be familiar with as much of the game as possible.

The time of learning one style and seeing it win out, is pretty much over. Versatility and variety are what makes MMA so much more difficult to teach, but also so much more entertaining to watch”, Pegau states as he finishes a couple paperwork items at the gym. It seems that Spokane might finally have a cohesive bond between boxing and MMA.
