Dustin Waterbly is the Warrior of the Quarter

Dustin Waterbly wins the Hit Pit MMA's Warrior of the Quarter with 4 tournaments all of which he placed in. Great Job Dustin!

RW

Dustin won 3 matches in the Subleague Championships by submission (and one was not even a guillotine!!!) and had 3 draws going into the finals match. In the finals, Dustin grappled a guy that he had a draw with from another tournament. This time, it would be winner take all !! Dustin had his opponent in a couple dangerous positions and some good reversals, but it went the distance. So now they both had the same amount of points. They went into a one round overtime that would decide the winner. This round played out similar to the first in which Dustin almost arm barred his opponent from guard. His opponent did not have as good of offense, but had great defense and managed to get a few reversals and mount. This match went the distance as well, and the judges awarded the decision to Dustin's opponent. A great match to watch!!!

Hit Pit MMA Victorious at Gravity Fighting 3/29/08

I cant say enough about how well we did at Gravity Fighting. Great Work!

Gravity Fighting, the nonprofit organization of promoters/coaches Kenji Nitta and Pete Coplan saw its debut at the Kennewick Fairgrounds in front of a quiet 350 spectators.  Featuring fighters from Spokane and Oregon, Gravity Fighting put on a good show with a fight card that suffered a couple last minute setbacks.

First off was a submission grappling match between two members of the Hit Pit MMA gym in Spokane WA.

Chad Catron vs. Dustin Waterbly. These two fought a two round battle that saw both men get an armbar each during the competition. Catron looked like he might finish his opponent with a submission late in the second period to take the go ahead but was not quite in time. The match finishes as a draw, one submission each.

Sparring Demonstration/Exhibition:

Bryan Lively 165 (Spokane Boxing) vs. Jeff Sacha 148 (Spokane Boxing). These two put on what was the fight of the night. For a couple of teammates that essentially just wanted to be able to spar in front of an audience, they really put some leather on each other. Bryan seemed to have the edge early on but Jeff battled back in the 2nd and 3rd. Both fighters spent the whole time punching and moving, with not one tie up during their 3 round affair. Afterwards, both fighters mentioned that they were going at it with each other and really wanted to show off for the crowd. They did so in grand fashion. Great fight.

MMA Matches:

Doug Rima 0-0, 157 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) of Spokane WA vs. Jose Avila 0-0, 160 (TCMMA) of Kennewick WA

These two put on a good fight and it went back and forth with Rima not wanting to stand with Avila for any longer than he had to. For the most part Avila kept the fight standing where he had the advantage. In the end, the judges saw it the same and all scored Avila as a 30-27 winner.

Light Heavyweight Title Fight

Matt “the Thrill” Hill 0-0, 203 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) vs. “the Aztec Heat” Pro Escobedo 3-0, 204 (Impact Jiu-jitsu) of Beaverton Oregon.

Escobedo by TKO (ref Stoppage) 1:10 round 1

Brent “the Black Smith” Conley 0-0, 168.5 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) vs. Shane “Insane” Simmons 0-0, 170 (TCMMA)

Simmons by RNC 1:45 round 1

Heavyweight Title Fight

Kyle Welch 0-0, 253 (TCMMA) Burbank WA vs. Daniel Krug 4-1, 250 (Impact Jiu-jitsu) Beaverton Oregon

Krug by Guillotine choke   : 46 round 1

Robert Gmeiner 0-0, 186 (United Grappling and Spirit Martial Arts) vs. Daniel Valdez  0-1, 205 (Hit Pit MMA) Spokane WA

Valdez by TKO punches: 36 round 1

Daniel did a great job of punching through to defend the takedown and came out really aggressive early. Great sportsmanship showed as he knew his opponent was done and stopped before the ref moved in.

Kenji needs some Helpers

Hey guys. Kenji needs some helpers for his debut MMA event in Kennewick on March 29th. www.gravityfighting.org  If you don't mind helping out at the event, Kenji has said that he would make sure to get you in for free. It shouldn't be too much work, just setting up and helping facilitate some of the action/fighters. If you are willing to help out, please give me a call so i can let him know who is available and have the tickets ready. Even if you don't want to help, please come out and support Daniel Valdez on his fight if you can.

  Hamilton Throwdown Results!!!

A great showing for Icon Gym this weekend in the great republic of Montana. Icon Gym started the night with a big TKO due to strikes from Sean Johnson over Ramon Ramos of MT. Sean's opponent was tough, but he couldn't match Sean's rhythm and gave up his back before the ref stopped the bout due to strikes in the second round, and improved Sean to 2-3, and 2-0 at 155 lbs.

Next up was Neil Youngman, who got win of the night over a very game first time fighter in Nick Hedtzel. One beautiful left put Nick on queer street, and a second one left Nick out cold. Great killer instincts from Neil, who gets the first round KO, and improved to 1-1-1.

The crowd was hyped for hometown favorite and first time fighter Sam Polk, but Icon Gym's fearless leader Kenji Nitta had been there before. After a couple of quick exchanges, Sam tried a takedown, but was thwarted and ultimately mounted by Kenji. The ref stopped this bout after 10-15 unanswered punches, after Sam gave up his back, and Kenji earned his third win by TKO, improving to 3-0 for Fightforce and 3-1 overall.

Icon Gym's John Yeager was up next at 160, and put his 8-3 record on the line against Hellena's Casey Kelly and his 7-1 record in the night's main event. John was working to take the fight to the ground, but Casey was having none of that. After a long round of punches and an unbelievable display of heart, the corner decided John had had enough and threw in the towel, bringing John to 8-4.

The final fight of the night was Icon's Matt Williams. Matt was facing Montana's Jory Erickson at 195. Matt had some trouble making it to the venue, but he went out hard at the bell winning two of the three exchanges. Jory quickly decided he would lose the standup battle and took Matt down with a deep double and worked some great ground control before submitting Matt with a good rear naked choke.

A great night and a good showing for Icon Gym, as we went 3-2. Look for Kenji and Neil in December at the next Fightforce event, and Matt at Elements in Spokane.

New Fight Club Opens in Central Spokane

Preparing fighters in Spokane that would like to compete in the sport of mixed martial arts. Fighting in Spokane has never had a brighter future, and with that, the need for intense training has never been greater.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT

MMA in Spokane is growing fast. None seem to recognize this more than local boxing pro turned coach, Rick Welliver.

Welliver with the help of his brothers; also pro boxers, Dewey and Chauncey, has established himself at the top of the heap in the boxing department here in Spokane. But even a diehard boxer like Rick seems to think this MMA thing is not a little red stepsister to boxing like some of his other boxing colleagues do. “Hey, this thing is taking off. And I want to be a part of it. Do I want to move into MMA instead of boxing? No way. But I would sure like to see some guys that could actually box when they are fighting instead of just throwing wild punches. “And with that push, Welliver’s Spokane Boxing has now opted to start training people in MMA. The catalyst came when a friend of Rick’s told him that he thought people would jump at the chance to have access to pro level boxing while they were training to compete in MMA.

Sometimes the biggest treasure is right under your nose. Or in this case right under your feet. The basement at Spokane Boxing has over 2000 sqft of floor space and just the right ambiance to bring out the fighter within. Fully matted with a lounge area for reviewing fights and chilling out, the Hit Pit MMA (www.hitpitmma.com ) gym has a distinct blend of toughness and class. The gym is not for everyone. Hit Pit MMA caters more toward the aspiring or ascending competitor than they do the casual fan. Practices are intense and focused. “Like it or not, this is the type of practice that most athletes need in order to compete in a sport as demanding as mixed martial arts”, says Coach RW Pegau.

Pegau began his training in southern California while enlisted in the USMC. “Yeah, things were pretty intense down there. It’s like the Mecca of BJJ and stuff like that, down in Southern Cal.” But after his enlistment ended he wanted to move back to Spokane to be near his family. The chance of doing more of MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was unlikely to say the least. Pegau trained off and on while going to school and forging his career. Now though, he says that he is ready to try and give back some of that training that he got from others. “I’ve never really thought that one thing beats all. I really enjoy learning new ways of doing things and seeing how different schools operate.” At times that meant going to local high school gyms and practicing with their wrestling team. A more that awkward task at times, says the young looking 28 year old. “I had a kid ask if I was a senior as I walked into LC one time. I told him not for about 10 years.” Pegau has enlisted a group of different instructors to help him train people for fighting at MMA. “You can’t have one person trying to do everything in this sport. People that claim to be that good at all the functions of MMA are either kidding themselves and their students, or they should be in the UFC.” Hit Pit MMA features coaching and instruction from elite level boxers, Muy Thai kick boxers, submission grapplers, along with some judo and wrestling standouts to fill in all the gaps. “Lots of things can happen in a fight, and you need to be familiar with as much of the game as possible.

The time of learning one style and seeing it win out, is pretty much over. Versatility and variety are what makes MMA so much more difficult to teach, but also so much more entertaining to watch”, Pegau states as he finishes a couple paperwork items at the gym. It seems that Spokane might finally have a cohesive bond between boxing and MMA.

The weather is likely going to be less than friendly, so we will have the social gathering inside the facility. Just come straight in the front doors and look to the right. The stairs lead down to the Hit Pit. Hope to see you all there.

Just got off the phone with a writer from the SR. Good interview about the new gym. They were almost as excited about the gym as I am. Hope to see an article either this Friday or weekend. Look for it and check us out.
